Interacting Cognitive Subsystems underpinning 3rd Wave CBT.

The publications and therapeutic approaches that follow employ ICS as a way of approaching CBT across diagnoses – because:  ICS provides a cognitive science based rationale for:

• The disjunction between thought and emotion
• The centrality of arousal in understanding mental health difficulties
• Attachment and relationship as central to the self, and central to the therapeutic process
• The role of mindfulness in providing a way into the process between thought and emotion and behaviour.

ICS Symposium 2008

Bridging the gap between Cognitive theory and therapy: using ICS to inform CBT

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Inpatient Units.

Since June 2004, I have been employed as a consultant clinical psychologist and lead for psychological therapies at Woodhaven Acute Inpatient Unit (Adult Mental Health).  This is an innovative, new build hospital that serves the New Forest and West Southampton.  With my colleague, Dr. Hannah Wilson (clinical psychologist), we have been developing and evaluating an approach to delivering therapy within the inpatient environment, that fits within the "third wave" CBT paradigm.

I convened a Symposium on " CBT for Acute Inpatient Units' at both of these conferences, in order to bring together people concerned with this type of service, and to demonstrate the good practice that is out there.
